Me and hunting partner had one within 8yds today and couldn't get the trigger pulled... first saw him 150ish yds away and he strutted around before coming up the mtn on a rope. Unfortunately he popped up from the bench below to our right, opposite the direction of our guns... I heard close drumming and made the rookie mistake of moving my head to look for the bird and bumped him. Can't get that blue head, "PUTT... PUTT... PUTT" and sudden burst into flight out of my head... yall have a good night. :)

Been there. Mountain birds are tough to hunt. Had one do the same thing last week to me back in Paint Rock Valley. They are a challenge. My Tennessee birds, however, love to commit suicide! So I get the monkey off my back in Tennessee and then fine tune my skills in the mountains! Good luck!

It hurts watching them get off with out shooting for sure. I had one last Wend morning at 30 steps and had to watch his hens take him off. I'll get back up with him this week though.

The haunting of a missed opportunity always sticks with you. I feel your pain.

I took a rookie Hunter the first weekend and we had two stutters at 40yds. The hens came in first and he took his gun off his shoulder. The gobblers came in silent and he locked up with 12 sets of eyes looking his way. I was sick for weeks after that...
