I know this may turn into a Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge, or a Browning vs Beretta, vs Benelli question, nonetheless...
What caliber deer rifle should I get?

I will be hunting deer and hogs in Alabama.
80 - 100 yard shots average
However, may have to make the occasional 300 yard shot.

I do not want a 300 mag!!

Ammo availability and cost of ammo greatly considered here.

What do y'all say????

My main Rifle is 30-06 and I don't really hunt with anything else now, but .308 and .270 I have also used and were good calibers as well. 2 of my buddy's I hunt with use a 7mm mag, but that is overkill to me.

I use a 270 most the time but I also use my 7mag but like he said its a little overkill
30-30 is a good gun for short distances but not for the 300 yards you wanna shoot

How is the recoil of a 30-06 vs .270 vs .308?

I honestly can't tell a difference. I would say .308 probably had the least recoil, but I would have to shoot all 3 back to back to be able to tell you for sure.

30-06 and don't look back.. it is one of if not the most versatile gun caliber wise.. more available bullets (grain wise) than any other caliber. 308 is a great deer gun also with a lil less recoil than a 30-06, even tho you can get reduced recoil 30-06 shells... and second of all are you kidding me about recoil?!?! ur bigger than most full grown grizzly bears a lil mule kicking you shouldn't bother you!!

on another note my wife shoots a 308 and my 30-06 and doesn't complain

Get you a .280. Awesome round. I have a Reminton 700 in .280. (Same as 7mm if I'm not mistaken)

You really can't go wrong with either the 06, .270, or .308. If you are worried about recoil, get a BAR II in 06 or .270. I think the .308 is a very versatile round with great ballistic possibilities and platforms (Remington R-25 is nice). Again, you can't go wrong with any of them from those distances. 300 yards isn't a long shot with any of the calibers. They are all good out to at least 500 (minimum). Majority of the time the shooter is the weakest link.

BAR II in 30-06 is what I shoot and love it

Well, I am looking at the future also. Not just for me, Hunter. 8)

7mm-08 in either a Tikka T3 or Browning X-Bolt. Easy on your shoulder and hard on deer. Plenty good at over 300yds and light enough recoil that my 10yr old daughter has been shooting it in a full size Tikka for the last 2 years. I've got a .270,.308,.243,.25-06and .30-06 in my safe and that 7mm-08 is what I always grab. Could very well be the perfect whitetail round. The next choice for me would be a .25-06

I would choose a 270 in bolt action with a good scope sight it in at 200 yards 270 is a flat shooting round.you can find ammo nearly anywhere unlike some of the odd calibers 2nd choice 30/06.

Don't discount the .243 WIN and a premium bullet...

I have a BAR in 30-06 that I have had for 30 years. Great gun! Bought the wife a Savage model 11 in 7mm-08 before last hunting season. She and it are deadly. Three shots. Three deer. 120, 175, 200 yards. I must say I have thought about buying one for myself since I can barely shoot hers with the youth stock.

ive always hunted with a .270

I use to shoot cheap 150 grain shells ($22 a box of 20) and have switched to 130 hornady ($45ish for a box of 20). ive been very impressed with hornady. I have a cheap rifle (remington 710) with a nice scope.

Most of my shots are from 30-100 yards and furthers ever was shy of the 300 yard marker. on the shorter shots > 40 yards the bullet doesnt open up well so the deer tend to run about 20-50 yards befor they go down but anywhere over that they usually fold up.

on the other hand my hunting buddy uses a 30-06 with 180 grain bullets and calls my .270 a cap gun!
