Last weekend, went gator hunting in the upper delta (Cliff's Landing) where we got a nice 8 footer. With all the water up there, I was wondering about hunting the upper delta and using a dog to bring them back. Is it safe? Any history of gators attacking dog swimming? We saw some huge 10, 11 and 12 footers at the checking station but it looks to me that a 6 to 8 footer could be trouble for a dog. Anyone have any first-hand knowledge? Thanks.

So there's enough gators to hunt, but you wonder if there's enough gators to worry about a dog? I wouldn't put my Chessie in there

Obviously depends on what time of year you are talking about here...

Old hunter- we have a camp north of lower Bryant's (about 15 minute boat ride from cliffs) and My dog hunts Anyday of duck season here. I've seen aligators in 30 degree weather (very rare) and they're so cold they can't move. Aligators are everywhere down here. We swim and tube and not even worry about them.

duckhunter15,

Thanks for the info. I would have expected the gators to either be hibernating or so lethargic, they wouldn't be much of a threat. Actually, the gators we hunted were quite skittish of the boat and tried their best to get away from us - even the big one we saw. Bottom line, I would probably hunt late season in the bay instead of early Teal season. We have enough Teal around here to keep me busy for the 20 days it will be open.

Like some of the other guys stated. It's basically a non issue in regular duck season.
